CONTACTS

Ruth Bebb and Chris Blake

Chamber music is what we enjoy, and communicating our love of this type of music to our audiences is important to us. We use spoken introductions to the music along with projected images to convey this. The words and opinions of the composers that we play, and the reactions of their friends, family and critics, are the source for our introductions. The images include people and places that were important to the composers.

EDUCATION

Last year on 25 November we presented a workshop on "The Musical" for AS music students. We suggested further study, gave an overview of the different periods mentioned in the syllabus, and, most importantly, included a good amount of live performance of the music being discussed.

The workshop took place in the Harty Room at Queen's University, and was run by Ruth Bebb. Ceara Grehan was the singer - Ceara has a great knowledge and understanding of the music discussed, and has a lot of experience in performing this style of music. The other performers were Wilson Shields, Gareth Hopkins and Andy Lavery, a great team who have worked together a lot, and conveyed their enthusiasm for this music.

For more information on our AS/A2 workshops, phone Ruth on 07813 321731 or contact Noreen McFarland at the Ulster Orchestra Education Department.

These workshops are always open to all schools in Northern Ireland where pupils are studying the CCEA syllabus, and there is a very small charge per pupil, teachers can come along free!

Here is a reaction to the 08 workshop on Chamber Music from a teacher;

"The quality and content of the presentation was excellent and perfect for the topic. The pictures made it more inreseting........my pupils were enthralled by the live music, most never having experienced the quality of professional musicians or this style of ensemble.....so much more alive than reading about it from a book or Wikipedia!............Can we have more?"

EDUCATION WORKSHOPS FOR ALL AGES

We have developed a number of programmes for schools, which you can book through the Education Department of the Ulster Orchestra. You can phone Ruth for more information on 07813 321731

NEW WORKSHOP FOR SPECIAL SCHOOLS

This workshop involves pupils in making music with us, we show them our instruments and show how they make sound. Pupils are encouraged to try instruments and enjoy making sounds themselves. Images and well-known music from film and TV helps them enjoy our visit. Chris has a vast amount of experience working in special schools, helping pupils to express themselves through music.

"MAKE MUSIC" FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS

"Make Music" gives an understanding of how brass and string instruments are constructed.Your pupils will help us make some basic examples, listen to some attractive music and hear some very unusual instruments played.

PERFORMANCE WORKSHOPS

We offer advice on the solo performance sections of GCSE, AS and A2 exams, helping your pupils with presentation and the spoken part of these exams.

GCSE WORKSHOPS

We cover aspects of the core area of study "Repeated patterns in music" and also touch on the optional areas "Musical traditions in Ireland" and "Incidental music".

AS/A2 WORKSHOPS

Once a year we present workshops for AS and A2 music pupils. These take place in Belfast and are open to all schools in Northern Ireland.

Contact Noreen McFarland, Education and Outreach Officer at the Ulster Orchestra for further details of our workshops.
